As we’ve often mentioned on this blog, not all plumbers are made equal, and finding a professional with the experience, expertise, and qualifications necessary to get the job done properly is easier said than done. As a consumer, it can be hard to know what questions to ask when hiring a contractor, so this week, we thought we’d run through a few key things you should ask when considering which plumbing contractor to go with.

Are you licensed?

This is the single most important question you can ask a plumber before they start work. In Australia, it’s illegal to carry out plumbing work unless you have a license, but that doesn’t stop many people operating without one. Plumbing carried out by an unlicensed individual may be substandard and fail inspection, leaving you liable for covering costs in the case of damage. A licensed plumber will be able to provide you with their license number and will be searchable on the Victorian Building Authority’s practitioner register.

Do you have insurance?

The next most important question to ask is whether or not your plumber is fully insured. If your plumber is licensed, they will probably have all the necessary insurance to cover themselves and their work in the case of damage or accident, but it’s always worth double checking.

How much will this job cost?

An experienced plumber will be able to provide an accurate estimate for their services. It is worth getting quotes from a few different professionals so you get a better understanding of what the median price is for the type of project you need done. Armed with this information, you’ll be able to query a contractor on why their price is comparatively higher or lower than their competitors and ultimately get better value for money.

Do you offer any kind of warranty?

Most plumbers offer some kind of guarantee on labour and parts, but the kind of warranty and the timeframe in which it is valid varies from contractor to contractor.

Are there any references I can look at?

Ask the plumber if they can provide you with references of recent clients who have received a similar service. This will not only help you gauge their level of professionalism and quality of work, it will also tell you whether or not the prospective plumber has recent experience working on this type of project.
