If you don’t know a lot about plumbing, then the kitchen drain might seem like a convenient place to dispose of all manner of muck and messes. In reality however, they’re not meant to be used for the disposal of anything other than water and many people are unknowingly blocking and damaging their drains by pouring down things that their plumbing cannot handle. This week, we run through some common substances that cause blockages and should never be poured down the sink.

Hot fat and oil

Grease, fats, and oils are probably the most common culprits when it comes to clogged drains and a broad range of foods fall into this category. Animal fats, meat scraps, gravy, cheese, butter, ice cream, nut butters, milk, shortening, lard, salad dressings, mayonnaise and olive oil are all examples of fats that can solidify and clog your drain. Prevent fat build-up by throwing fatty scraps into the bin and pouring liquids and oils into a jar for disposal.

Coffee grounds and tea leaves

They might seem small and harmless but coffee granules and tea leaves are one of the most common reasons for clogged S bends. Instead of pouring tea leaves and grounds down the drain, put them on the garden to discourage snails and add nutrients to the soil.

Anything that swells with water

There are a number of food stuffs that swell or solidify when exposed to water including semolina, rice, jelly crystals, gelatine, flour and pastry scraps. These should always be thrown in the bin.

When you pour medication down the drain, it ends up in our natural waterways. If you have expired medication, the best way to deal with it is to seal it in a bag with something unpalatable like kitty litter or detergent before putting it in the bin.

Produce stickers

Although washing just one banana sticker down the drain might seem harmless, produce stickers are actually one of the most common reasons for blocked drains and pipes. They can also cause problems further down the line in the wastewater treatment pumps and hoses, as well as in the filters and screens. Avoid contributing to the problem by putting produce stickers in the bin or start a sticker collection.
